What to Look for in an Online Tutor

A high rating tells you a teacher hasn't disappointed many people — it doesn't tell you whether they're the right teacher for you specifically. Two 4.9-star tutors can have completely different styles, and the difference matters more than the decimal point.

Watch how a teacher responds in a trial class when you get something wrong. Some default to correcting immediately; others let you finish the thought first. Neither is universally better, but one of them will match how you actually learn.

Ask about their planning style before you commit to a full course: do they follow a fixed syllabus, or adapt week to week based on what you're struggling with? If you have a specific goal — an exam date, a work deadline — you want a teacher who plans backward from that, not one running a generic curriculum.

Finally, pay attention to how they handle feedback about their own teaching. A teacher who welcomes "can we slow down on this part" is one you can have an honest working relationship with for months, which matters far more over time than any single class going well.
